Behind the Scenes at the Hendrik Conscience Heritage Library

Hendrik Conscienceplein 4, Antwerp

Built in 1481, the Conscience Library spans more than five centuries of Antwerp and Flemish history. Today it contains more than 1.5 million volumes, including 40,000 books dating from before 1830. And its Nottebohm Room is a stunning tribute to what a library should be.

Known simply as the City Library prior to 2008, today the library bears the name of Hendrik Conscience, (born 1812, Antwerp—died 1883, Elsene). As a romantic novelist, Conscience so dominated the birth and development of the Flemish novel that it is said he “taught his people to read.”
