Cooking Workshop: Thai Street Food

For over two centuries food has been sold from boats on Thailand’s rivers and canals. Since the early 20th century, there’s been a shift to selling food from stalls on city streets. The popularity of street food skyrocketed in the early 1960s as more and more people moved to urban areas.

Our very own Carol Ribbens, whose specialty is Thai food, will guide us in preparing three tasty main dishes, plus a salad and beverage:

  • Pad Thai with scampis,
  • Somtum (green papaya salad)
  • Kai Joew Moo Sab (minced pork omelette)
  • Larb Gai with minced chicken served in a lettuce leaf
  • Cha Yen (iced tea)

Where: Diana Coetzee’s apartment.

Getting there: Tram 8 and Tram 10 run from Astrid (Central Station) along the Leien. Get off at Stadspark (the first stop after the tram comes above ground again) and cross Frankrijklei towards Stoopstraat. Turn right and walk along Frankrijklei (back towards the city) for 5 minutes to #88.

Time: 10:00 AM. After everything is prepared, we’ll eat lunch together. So, we’ll wrap the workshop up by 2 PM.

Cost: Members €10; guests €15 to be paid to ABIW.

In addition, participants will share in the cost of the ingredients, estimated at €7 to €8 per person, to be paid in cash to Carol Ribbens at the workshop.

To register: Please sign up with Kathryn Passmore or Sue Van Looy, by Thursday November 8th, providing the attendees’ names. Members will be given priority. Guests will be held on a waiting list and will be welcome if space allows.

Payment: Transfer the appropriate amount to the ABIW account, mentioning your name(s) and “Cooking Workshop”. The deadline for both registration and payment is Thursday November 8th. Receipt of payment confirms members’ bookings. Guests will be notified, if there is space for them to participate. Guest fees will be refunded if there is insufficient space.

Notes:   Group size is limited to 9 participants, plus our host.

Bring some plastic containers just in case there are any leftovers!

If you are inclined towards spills, bring an apron.
