Travel Restrictions

Whilst the Foot and Mouth epidemic restrictions are still active, there are stringent restrictions on what you can bring out of the UK. If you're lucky, you may see a sign that tells you not to take out meat and dairy products. However, it appears that UK customs are taking this in its widest interpretation and confiscating everything which may contain these, cooked or not, such as biscuits, cakes and chocolates.

Regrettably and incredibly, I cannot find any official information on this. So be careful in what you bring back.

Flying

Go to the web site of your departure airport before travelling to check out any restrictions. See Local Airports below.

Emergency:

Travellers can now dial 112 in an emergency in any EU country, and you will be connected to an operator who will either deal with you directly or transfer you to the appropriate emergency service.

Health Insurance

Make sure you take your free European Health Insurance card. For more information check out the web site of the European Health Insurance Card.

De Lijn buses and trams Has a handy travel planner but the site is only in Dutch.

To And From The UK

Airlines

British Airways

British Midland - some cheap fares available.

RyanAir - from Charleroi - south of Brussels.

Virgin Express - No longer flies to UK. Cheap options to other European destinations

EasyJet - Only from Schipol

SN Brussels Airlines - Medium priced fares.

FlyBe.com

VLM - Has some cheap flights from Zaventem to City Airport and other locations.

Ferries

Hoverspeed is no longer operating.

SeaFrance

P&O - Payment is made in pounds sterling. With the low exchange rate, this is about the same, or cheaper than Norfolk line, where payment is in euros. P&O also have a nice restaurant.

Brittany Ferries

SpeedFerries.com (Possibly the cheapest but operating to and from Boulogne.

Norfolkline Now one of the cheapest with fares from 19 pounds. 2 hour crossing. Operating between Dover and Dunkerque. Norfolkline has changed its pricing structure. Make sure you check out the cost of a return fare as it is usually cheaper than buying 2 single fares. I'm glad to say that the restaurant is much improved!

DFDS Seaways - operate an overnight service from Ijmuiden (near Amsterdam) to Newcastle. One of our members has used this and thoroughly recommends it with the drive back home taking only 2 hours.

Blue Star Ferries - operate a service from Zeebrugge to Rosyth (Edinburgh)

Trains

Eurotunnel - tends to be expensive but fast with frequent trains. If you miss one you just go on the next. There are price deals for short stays or very cheap for a day return.

Eurostar - book well in advance for cheaper options.
