Tips for printing your Grapevine
A few tips on saving paper and ink for those who wish to print their
Grapevine:
Saving Paper
Recycle
The best way of saving paper is of course to recycle used A4 where only one side has been printed on.
Print Both Sides
If you don’t like that idea, you can also print both sides of a clean sheet. Few of us are lucky enough to afford a printer that will do that automatically for us. It’s called “duplex” printing. Look on your printer “Properties” or options to see if you can do that. (As printers all have slightly different properties/options I can’t give exact instructions here and I’m guessing most of us can’t do it any way.)
The rest of us without a duplex printer have to be a little clever. Here are
the instructions for PC users: (Mac users see below)
With your magazine open, click on FILE and PRINT . The print window opens.
It is divided into sections. The top section is “Printer” and here you should see your default printer. If you have several printers you can also select another one. Next to the printer is the “Properties” button. Underneath the “Properties” button, you will see “Documents and Forms”.
Select “Document” from the drop-down list of options.
To the left side of the print window, there is a box headed “Print Range”. Near the bottom of that section, you will see “Subset”. Next to it is a drop down list of options. Click on the black arrow at the right to see the list and select “Odd pages”.
Under “Page scaling” select “Fit to Printable Area”. (This is because different printers use different margins. Otherwise, there’s a possibility your printer might chop a bit off!)
Click the OK button.
As they’re printing, make sure the sheets stack properly with the current sheet on top of the previous one. (Some printers have a nasty habit of pushing them
out between previously printed sheets.) That way, page 1 is at the bottom, and the last sheet at the top.
When all the odd pages have been printed, remove any other paper from the printer feeder, pick up your stack of half printed papers and put them back into the feeder. Make sure you put the top of the sheet to feed in first. Also make sure you know which way round your paper goes in - you don’t want to print twice on the same side! (Do a test print on an old piece of paper first if you’re not sure)
Click on FILE and PRINT again.
The print window opens. This time, in the box headed “Print Range”, select “Even pages” in the “Subset” drop-down list.
Click OK.
Hopefully, if your printer behaves and only pulls off one sheet at a time, you will have a double-sided printed Grapevine which you can staple to produce a booklet.
Mac users:
Click on FILE and PRINT.
Click on the inverted triangle next to “Printer Choice”. On the submenu which appears, choose the default “Copies & Pages”.
Under this is a subset choice with options: “All pages in range”, “Odd pages only” and “Even pages only”, choose “Odd Pages only”, and press PRINT.
Continue as from point 4 above.
Saving Ink
Here are a few things you can do to save ink.
Print Draft Quality
This saves a lot of ink and I always use this setting by default.
With your magazine open, click on FILE and PRINT.
The print window opens. Click the “Properties” button.
The window that appears will vary according to which printer you selected in the previous window so I cannot give exact instructions. Look for something about quality settings.
Most printers are set by default to a medium standard. You can usually change this to a “draft” or “low” quality and the document will still be legible. Click OK.
Mac users:
Click on FILE and PRINT.
Click on the inverted triangle next to “Printer Choice”. On submenu which appears, choose “Quality and Media”.
Go to Print Mode and Detailed Setting where you can move the slide to Fast for draft print, or slow for fine quality print.
Print in Black and White
Colour ink is usually more expensive than black and white. If your printer has separate black and colour cartridges, you can save your colour ink.
In the Printer Properties window, look for the colour options. Select black and click OK.
Mac users:
Click on FILE and PRINT.
Click on the inverted triangle next to “Printer Choice”. On submenu which appears, choose “Quality and Media”.
Go to Print Mode and in this submenu to Grayscale Printing to save expensive colour inks.
Don’t Print Every Page
And last but not least, you can print just the pages you need. In the main print window under “Print Range”, there are various options. You can print the page you are currently looking at by selecting “Current Page”, or if you know the numbers of the pages you want, enter them in the pages box. Separate the page numbers with a comma.
