Also in Useful Information: Up-to-date Information on TrafficFor information about traffic conditions and road works, including how best to get in and out of the city try some of the following links: The English version of the official Antwerp traffic site The Dutch version of the above, which has a little bit more and is probably more up-to-date. Getting In and Out of AntwerpThe directions into Antwerp can be confusing. The motorway Ring Road around Antwerp to the south is called the R1, however most of the motorway signs do not show this information. (Ring roads in Belgium all get an R number; the ring road around Brussels heads the list: the R0.) What you will see when approaching Antwerp are black-on-yellow numbers 1 and 2.
A stranger can fall into the trap of thinking they need to take the number 1. The black-on-yellow numbers 1 and 2 refer to 'clockwise' and 'anticlockwise' respectively. This is explained, as you can see above, but as there are so many signs when approaching Antwerp, they can easily be missed. Check out which way you need to go round Antwerp. (In most cases, if you are coming from the Netherlands, you will follow the number 1 (clockwise). If you are coming from the UK via Gent, or from Brussels, you will most probably follow the number 2 (anticlockwise)!) |
