Introducing the Ghent Group to Antwerp

Our sister club in Ghent came to visit us in Antwerp for a Saturday Special

We all met outside the Steen where Valerie explained something of the early history of Antwerp.

Janet then took over and led the group to the Vleeshuis. She warned the group to keep looking for the Madonnas on the street corners. On the right is a typical example on the corner of the Vleeshuis with its corner street lighting.
We then moved on via the Ruckersplein and Oude Beurs to the Grote Markt and from there we walked via Kaasrui to the Hendrick Conscienceplein. (below right where you can see a statue of Hendrik Conscience.)
Eventually we arrived at the Rockoxhuis where Gerry took over and explained something about Rockox. Below the group is visiting his house which has been restored to look very much as it was in his time.
Below left: trying to work out all the Dutch sayings in this painting by Breughel.

Arriving for lunch.

After lunch we went downstairs to enjoy our coffee in the bar area.
After lunch we had a guided tour of the Cathedral. Our guide was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable and we all very much enjoyed it, staying much too long!
To finish off the day, we went for refreshments to the restaurant in the Bourla theatre.
